Sustainable, Commercial Plantation
& Conservation Areas

Our trees provide homes and refuge to wildlife

Rex Forestry is working to develop sustainable timber plantations and conservation areas within this concession. We are developing and operating globally high-quality and cost competitive commercial forestry plantations producing veneer, plywood and other timber products sustainably, whilst providing environmental, social and economic benefit to local communities.

We are also restoring ecosystems to enhance flora and fauna that will benefit both Nigeria and Africa more widely.

We specialize in the production of:

Plywood

Veneers

From 2002 to 2020, Nigeria lost 141kha of humid primary forest, making up 14% of its total tree cover loss in the same time period. Total area of humid primary forest in Nigeria decreased by 7.4% in this time period. In 2005, Nigeria had the highest rate of deforestation in the world according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and even by 2018, rates of deforestation were as high as 17% per year.

Indeed by 2018 Nigeria has lost 96% of its forest due to deforestation, according to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF). This has had huge implications for Nigeria and the world. Nigeria has experienced desertification at rates far higher than globally, whilst a large carbon sink for the world has been lost. Nigeria's wide biodiversity of 864 species of birds, 285 mammals, 203 reptiles, 117 amphibians, 775 fishes and 4,715 species of higher plants have also been strongly affected by the negative impacts of deforestation.

Rex Forestry has a vision to change this, to build Nigeria’s first functioning and operating Sustainable Plantation and Conservation Area. Experienced partners in forestry operations, as well as West African and Nigerian operators have come together in order to build a legacy for Nigeria and Africa, developing forestry in an area that has not been attempted for many decades, whilst absorbing carbon at a time the world so desperately requires this.

Sustainability

We know that good relationships with our employees and community are critical for long term success. We strive for proactive, mutually respectful and lasting relationships with all our stakeholders. With local communities having a vested interest in the success of the Company, they work to promote and protect Rex.

Environment & Conservation

Whilst the Company will have a sustainable commercial timber operation, we believe strongly in the conservation and regeneration of indigenous flora, fauna and habitats. Rex Forestry therefore aims to ensure that environmentally sensitive areas, such as those along the edge of rivers and wildlife corridors are conserved and regenerated. Rex conserves all areas of natural forest, cultural heritage and other valuable habitats.
