Rex Forestry is working to develop sustainable timber plantations and conservation areas within this concession. We are developing and operating globally high-quality and cost competitive commercial forestry plantations producing veneer, plywood and other timber products sustainably, whilst providing environmental, social and economic benefit to local communities.
We are also restoring ecosystems to enhance flora and fauna that will benefit both Nigeria and Africa more widely.
Rex aims to have significant economic impact in the areas in which we operate through employment, community development and local procurement of supplies and infrastructure. We know that good relationships with our employees and community are critical for long term success. We strive for proactive, mutually respectful and lasting relationships with all our stakeholders. With local communities having a vested interest in the success of the Company, they work to promote and protect Rex.
Whilst the Company will have a sustainable commercial timber operation, we believe strongly in the conservation and regeneration of indigenous flora, fauna and habitats. Rex Forestry therefore aims to ensure that environmentally sensitive areas, such as those along the edge of rivers and wildlife corridors are conserved and regenerated. Rex conserves all areas of natural forest, cultural heritage and other valuable habitats.
Rex Forestry Limited stands at the forefront of sustainable forestry management in Nigeria, driving transformative environmental conservation and biodiversity restoration efforts. Through strategic partnerships and a commitment to sustainability, the company integrates responsible forestry practices with community development, ensuring a balance between economic growth and ecological preservation.
Dedicated to reversing deforestation trends, particularly within the Oluwa Forest Reserve, Rex Forestry Limited has successfully reforested 550 hectares over the past two years with Gmelina arborea, eucalyptus, acacia, and indigenous tree species. This afforestation initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Climate Change Policy and the Paris Agreement, contributing to carbon sequestration and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, reinforcing Nigeria’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
The company designates High Conservation Value (HCV) areas within its concessions to protect biodiversity and is conducting a comprehensive Biodiversity Assessment to safeguard key habitats. Transitioning to renewable energy, it integrates solar solutions in guest houses and offices while developing waste management facilities to minimize pollution.
Rex Forestry Limited is a key driver of employment, creating over 630 jobs between 2022 and 2024, with 590 positions filled by local residents, including women and youth. The workforce includes 21 forestry professionals with BSc and MSc qualifications, highlighting its investment in professional development. Beyond environmental efforts, the company fosters community well-being through CSR programs such as establishing the Rex Health Center, constructing a 20-kilometer road for improved access, developing borehole water projects in Makinde and Leege villages, hosting over 100 forestry interns from the Federal University of Technology Akure, and distributing seedlings for World Environmental Day 2023.
Looking ahead, Rex Forestry Limited aims to attain Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, complete the Sol Wood Ply Mill for sustainable timber processing, increase renewable energy adoption, and explore carbon credit initiatives. The company exemplifies a sustainable forestry model that harmonizes economic growth with environmental and social responsibility, setting new benchmarks in Nigeria’s forestry sector and shaping a greener, more resilient future.
At Rex Forestry, we recognize our people as our greatest assets. The company is therefore committed to the personal development of its staff through continuous training and development. We have continued to help our staff realize their dreams, while creating opportunities for them to fulfill their personal and professional potential.
